Me, Chetna and other animals
It was a dark and stormy night, thus, I began to write. Well, I know that it is a classic literary cliche. Even the dog in Peanuts, starts all his stories with this line. But I don’t think that she knew it. She maybe quite adept at other literary nuances, but cliches are entirely in a league of their own. In fact she was quite pleased with the start. She had a very good reason to be appreciative of it, and that was, her easy relation to it.
It was a dark and stormy night. I was standing in my verandah, feeling the strong winds hitting my face. As the few drops of rain came down, I came inside and started reading something by Khalil Gibran, it said, “Miserable is the man who loves a woman and takes her for a wife …”. Just then the phone rang. I picked it up, and said, “Hello”.
“Hello, how are you?” she said, in her usual call-centric way.
“What are you doing?” I replied.
“You know what, I was coming along with him …” she said giggling.
“Who’s him, your boyfriend?” I interrupted.
“Yes, of course. Actually we were going down for a party and you won’t believe what happened, his car broke down. We are now very close to your place”. She said, laughing, all the while.
“So?”
“So what, just come up here with a mechanic?”
“No”.
“No! Can’t you do this much for me?”
“No, not in my hundred lives”.
“Oh please!”
“Alright”.
“Oh! You are such a darling”.
She gave me their exact location.
It was the only time that I met her boyfriend. I left him with the mechanic and drove her on my bike to her place. As it was raining very heavily, considering it unsafe, we decided that I spend the night with her.
Since then, the dark and stormy nights have ceased to exist, but the stories, still begin with them.
