That Seventies Show
It took me eight months to convince my dad that my little brother would never wear a leather belt. Even if it is snakeskin or crocodile skin or any damn skin… He watched in horror as young Yatin paraded in a cheap chunky belt with a false buckle and bright colours.
“My belt was 800 Bucks. What he is wearing must have cost 50 Rupees”, he said sullenly. I know daddy. I know. I think to myself. Life has changed.
He angrily eyes my sister who wears a teeny tiny skirt to college and asks me, “You have also passed the same age. I never saw you in skirts of that length.” I smile to him and hug him. “Daddy, you are growing old.” I tell him and kiss his forehead. He smiles back and says, “I guess so.”
He wonders why people would wear lose T Shirts and how can anyone buy shoes that would cost 8000 Rupees. One could buy a whole new wardrobe in that amount, he says. My sweet old father. He bought me a new walkman today at which my sister said “What’s this dad, you should’ve bought her an ipod. Cassettes are becoming obsolete.”
He looked at me sadly and asked, “honey you don’t like it?” I hug him and tell him I love it. The joy on his face is pretty childish. “Next time I will buy you an ipod.” “No daddy, next time I will buy you an ipod.”
And he is proud of his little girl. That night I see him checking out what an ipod is on the internet. He quickly switches the monitor off on seeing me and sheepishly smiles. “Neha, am I really growing old?”
“No papa. World’s changed in the last 30 years. You just never had the time to pay attention to it.”
We both smile this time. And he makes me sit in his lap. Just like he used to when I was ten. And I place my head on the shoulder of the number one man in my life.
Daddy…
