Loser’s paradise a second thought.
The kind of theories and prejudices people have formulated towards the Business Process Outsourcing, or more commonly known as BPO, sector needs a paradigm shift. The industry as a whole has been adjudged with the phrasal adjectives like ‘a loser’s job’, ’short-term solution’, ‘way to fast-buck’, and many more; but any industry which offers good money, a different kind of social and moral outlook, a whole new lifestyle and is rumoured to be the next-big-thing always has its share of detractors yet everyone given an opportunity would like to travel the same highway to success. It is often said that the people working in BPO sector, who have to stay awake the whole night long get addicted to cigarettes, alcohol and even narcotics but how can one explain the fact that the rickshaw peddlers and the street beggars, who also have the similar addictions, have nothing to do with the BPO. It is also a known fact that that working in long and treacherous night shifts and having to handle the foreigners abusing you and your country has a strong and often ever-lasting impact on the physiological and psychological health of the employees, but many big-wigs who are trying to work their way up to the higher step on the corporate hierarchy ladder, or who are already at that level, also have to face similar sorts of performance related pressures.
So all these perils are there in all occupations regardless of the job and work profile a person has, the utmost importance should be on the ability of the person to react to it and have the penchant for being a success.
The BPO sector as a whole is witnessing a tremendous amount of upsurge in the scope of work, revenues and recognition. This can be attributed to many factors like low-cost labour, second largest English speaking population and a high level of technological knowledge, among many. The range of work has moved from low-level back office operations to high-end research and development work in the fields as varied as bio-medics, insurance and even construction sectors. This is essentially due to many big IT sector companies coming into the foray. Wipro BPO, among all the third party BPO companies, has become the second highest revenue grosser in the previous fiscal year.
I joined Wipro BPO nearly 18 months back, considering the fact that I was already a mother of two sweet little kids and had a husband who was against my taking up any kind of a job, it was a very hard decision for me to make more so because I was myself very fearful about working in a ‘call-center’. However, all my inhibitions and skepticisms were shed once I was through with my first week in Wipro BPO. Right through the training days and cultural shock, meeting new people from varied backgrounds, the speculations about the process and team changes, having my name put up on the walls of fame, the bad days on which I didn’t perform, wild fun at process parties and team outings, differences with team-mates and words of appreciation by the seniors, the desire to kill the boss and crying out loud, the family pressures and the job’s demands. I have found every moment of it equally cherishing and ever lasting. Most of the persons I have interacted with have been friendly and fun loving yet professional and ethical. There are many things that make Wipro BPO rise above other companies like the excellent work environment it offers with ample growth opportunities, good work culture with clear policies and world-class infrastructure, recognition for work and making employees feel like home with that extra bit of personal touch.
The above all factors just add-up and make my stint at Wipro BPO wanting to be a long-lasting and winning endeavour.
