Dear Fred
..and what of people? There is always the need for external stimulus. It runs parallel to all forms of introspection. If there were only one man on earth, he wouldn’t have to read a book to understand the universe. He’d know. He wouldn’t have to join a club or observe people at a theatre group. He wouldn’t be insane. Even if he never thought straight once in his life, there would be no one to call him names. You want to be able to express yourself in ways that do justice to the person you see yourself to be. As if every encounter with every stranger must be embellished, thanks to your superior powers of expression, with a passing window to your soul. Does the tree fall with a thud in the middle of the forest? Does silence mean anything in the absence of an observer? If language wasnt a given, would you still swear by the same adjectives?
